Gifts for a Nomad

Writer's picture: Curious KarliCurious Karli

Hey there!

It's that time of year where the seasons' change and everything gets a whole lot colder! But also a lot snugglier.

As a nomad, there are some things that really make my life more convent because they take up less space and/or are multifunctional, like a Swiss army knife. You can never have too many of those :)

I want to give you as a nomad or you as a gift-giving friend of a nomad some ideas for this fun holiday season.

1. 'Tis the season for small electronics. I absolutely love my 6th generation iPad(lucky for you they have already outdone themselves are on the 7th generation!). The reason I love it so much is that I don't have T.V. on the road, so I use Amazon Prime to watch movies. My little iPad works so well as a small space screen for viewing while also working as a mini laptop. If you have never messed around with a tablet of any kind I highly recommend starting with the Apple iPad because of how easy it is to use and play with your favorite apps. I didn't have a smartphone until very recently because my iPad was such a good alternative. I also enjoy using the Apple Pencil with the Procreate app to draw. It is a great stylist companion to the 6th & 7th generation iPads as well as the iPad pro.

2. A good comfy camping chair is a nomad essential. By golly, we definitely wear our chairs out! If I had a dollar for every time I saw someone fall through an old camping chair I would be rich! Even just a nice folding table to set your dinner plate on while outside is amazing.

There are even some fancier tables if you have been looking for something with a little more surface space.

3. Good power stations are really hard to come by. If you don't know what I mean by a power station, on the road we have limited electricity. Basically we have the 12-volt cigarette lighter while we are driving to charge our phone. Otherwise, unless we have something like a generator or solar panels with batteries to store power we go without it. I have been using the Jackery 240 for almost a year and I love it. It's a lithium battery base with one house plug and 2 USB plugs to charge my electronics. Small pocket-sized power stations come in handy too. I have been saved a few times by them when I was out in the boonies. Another good brand of a power station is Suaoki.

4. The sun will come out tomorrow... For me the hardest thing to come across what decent lighting for when the sun goes down. I have tried a few different lanterns over the years and am currently trying out new ones. Energizer has some really good battery operated lights that can be mounted. I put mine above my bed and it works great. Coleman makes good camping lanterns. This lantern is an upgraded version of the one I have been using for years. For a brand new collapsible lantern try this guy out.

5. Living in a small space makes it hard to have a lot of flat surfaces. I recently came across the lap desk and am loving it! When I snuggle up in bed for the night I still want to write or draw before going to sleep and having that desk helps out. Even during the day when I get my laptop out, I need a designated area to set up my temporary office.

There 5 things to think about to gift to your nomadic self or a friend.

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas

Stay Curious,

Karli
